Town criers were used extensively throughout Medieval England as a way to spread news or notify the inhabitants of an event. Most people of that time period could not read or write, so they relied on their town crier to inform them of what going on.  They would even read proclamations to the people. After the town crier would read his notice out loud, he would affix it to a nearby post or tree for all to see.  Today, sometimes you can still find a town crier on a city street corner hawking newspapers by yelling that days headlines.
