Boston's Back Bay is considered one of Boston's most photogenic areas. It is also the home of the "Victorian Brownstones." For over 5,000 years Native Americans used this area to catch fish. It was located on the western side of Boston. Until around 1814, this area was a tidal bay with tides rising and falling like most other salt water bays. A dam was then created that connected Boston to Watertown.

Beginning in the 1850s, this "Back Bay" area became one of many land-making projects designed to expand the Boston area. By the late nineteenth century, this Bay area had been filled in. Every 45 minutes, a 35-car train load of quarried gravel and fill arrived from Needham, Massachusetts, 9 miles away. This "created land" project added 570 acres to Boston and took approximately 55 years to complete.
