In the 1600's, the site of what would become Haymarket Square was called Mill Cove and located in a part of Boston Harbor.  This cove was dammed in 1640. In 1807, the cove was filled in. Images of the area in early 1800 show hay being sold in the this area, and after that, the name Haymarket Square was being used on maps around 1844.

Considered one of the oldest open-air markets in the United States, Boston's Haymarket has become a city icon. Pushcart's selling fresh fruit, seafood, and vegetables for over 300 years have been providing Boston locals with some of the freshest produce at the lowest prices around.
