Liberty means freedom from a tyrannical government. In the case of Boston, Bostonian's were fighting for their liberty from England. The Stamp Act of 1765 was the first show of defiance and a demand for Liberty. The Liberty Tree, the great elm tree planted around 1646, stood near the corner of now Essex and Washington Streets in downtown Boston. Effigies of tax collectors were hung from this tree and set on fire. In September 1765 a copper plate with the words "The Tree of Liberty" was affixed to the trunk of this tree. The Sons of Liberty held almost all of their meetings here. In August 1775, during the British siege of Boston, a group of Loyalists chopped the great tree down. But, today it still remains the spot where America's Liberty was born.
