The Speedwell was one of two ships, the other being the Mayflower,  that was to take the Pilgrims to the New World. At about 60 tons, the Speedwell was the smaller of the two ships. Both ships set sail for America from the port of Southhampton England on August 5, 1620. Soon after leaving port, the Speedwell began to leak and along with the Mayflower, put up in Dartmouth for repairs. Again, both ships set sail, and again the Speedwell began to leak. The Separatists decided to continue their voyage to America on the Mayflower and leave the Speedwell behind. Eleven people from the Speedwell boarded the Mayflower and on September 6, 1620, the Mayflower, with 102 passengers and crew, set sail again for the New World and arrived in Cape Cod on November 11, 1620. The rest is history……..
