Boston is called "Beantown" because of its historical association with baked beans. In the colonial period, Boston became known for its molasses-baked beans, a popular dish among the city's residents. The beans were often baked in molasses, a common byproduct of the rum industry, which was significant in Boston's economy during that time. This culinary tradition led to the nickname "Beantown."
The origin of baked beans in Massachusetts can be traced back to Native American cuisine. Indigenous peoples in the region, such as the Wampanoag, cooked beans with maple syrup and bear fat in clay pots. When European settlers arrived, they adapted this method, substituting ingredients like molasses and pork, which were more readily available to them.
The Puritans, who settled in New England, embraced baked beans as a convenient Sabbath meal. Puritan religious practices prohibited cooking on Sundays, so families would prepare a large pot of baked beans on Saturday to last through the day of rest. This practice helped cement baked beans as a staple in Massachusetts cuisine.
