Known as "Southie" by the locals, South Boston is one of the oldest neighborhoods in the United States and at one time its residence were mostly working class Irish Catholics. South Boston is also home to the "St. Patricks Day Parade".
In January 1776, Henry Knox, a young bookseller in Boston, brought General George Washington cannons from Fort Ticonderoga in New York. These cannons were placed upon Dorchester Heights in South Boston as a threat to the British Army who took over the Town of Boston. The British seeing these cannons decided it was best to evacuate the city. They did so on March 17, 1776. This "Evacuation Day" was declared a holiday in the City of Boston in 1901.
